The state government of Baden-Württemberg has set itself ambitious targets for expanding renewable energy and is pressing ahead with the energy transition. Achieving these targets will also involve expanding the number of photovoltaic plants on open spaces.
At the same time, the state is committed to reducing land use and achieving net zero. Particularly in light of the need for independent food security and the long-term sustainability of domestic food production, preserving our high-quality farmland as a key basis of production is an important priority.

Innovative approaches like agrivoltaics offer promising multifunctional land-use options that can ease the competition for land by combining energy generation and food production in more compatible ways. The potential synergy effects from combining photovoltaics and specialised crops are particularly promising because these crops are often grown under weather protection systems anyway. However, the project will also trial and study other potential innovative combinations. The findings and experiences gained will be made available for use in practical projects, thereby helping to promote the adoption of these technologies
